Rachel's Challenge

November 17th marked a day of change for Chandler's School and the community of Russellville. On this Tuesday, the seeds of Rachel Joy Scott's challenge were sewn in students and adults that participated in the events throughout the day. As a result of the day's impact, several adult volunteers have come forward and 150 students have expressed interest in being a part of the newly formed Chain Links Club, a service and kindness oriented club.

Signing the Proficient and Distinguished Banner is a Chandler's tradition!

On Tuesday, November 24th Chandler's celebrated historic test results! Students scoring Proficient and Distinguished were recognized with an award and the annual signing of the school posters. On a national level, Chandler's continued to meet all No Child Left Behind Act goals. On a state level, last year's students set a new precedent for success by scoring some of the highest test results to date. Thanks to all the businesses who donated food!

Akeelah and the Bee meets Chandler's

On December 11th, 4th-8th grade students will compete for a chance to win the county-wide spelling bee. Three students from each grade level will emerge from classroom competitions and represent Chandler's and their grade-level. Overall winners from the county will go on to the state competition sponsored by the Kentucky Derby Festival.

Chandler's would like to express thanks to the PTOs and Family Resource Service Centers for the sponsorship.

Veteran's Day Program

Chandler's held their annual Veteran's Day Program to pay tribute to those who have served and protected our country. The intermediate classes of Mrs. Healy, Ms. Porter, Mr. Simpson, Mrs. Flora, and Mrs. White presented a musical that was accompanied by a slide show created by 8th graders in Mrs. Decker's Social Studies class.

Breanna Madison sang a solo, "American Tears." There were also two special guests, Mr. Joe Harlan and his son Mr. Joe Michael Harlan. Joe Michael Harlan presented the students with a short movie which depicts the activities that the 101st Airborne complete on a daily basis. He then spoke to the crowd about United States veterans and how important it is to honor them. The colors were presented by Jeff Gillepsie, a retired Army veteran.

Joe Harlan was a WWII veteran who was assigned to the 80th Blue Ridge Mountain Division, 3rd Army under General Patton. He was sent to Germany and was with the 80th Division when they crossed the Rhine River in Germany in March of 1945. He was taken captive in April of that same year by the Germans. After three days as a prisoner of war, he and his squad made an escape. The 80th Division entered the Buchenwalk Concentration Camp and a few weeks later liberated the Ebernsee sub camp of the Mauthhuasen Concentration Camp.

His son, Joe Michael Harlan, graduated from Adairville High School and WKU. He served with the 10th Special Forces Airborne Group (Green Berets) at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. In 1974 he was employed in the Civil Service by the Army at Fort Campbell working in the Outdoor Recreation Program and in the Division of the G3 Operations. He served in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. In 2005 he retired with 34 years of Federal Service.

Jeff Gillepsie is a 2o year veteran of the Army who served in Panama in Operation Just Cause, Desert Shield, and Desert Storm.

5 p.m. Home basketball game against Todd County.

11/17/09-Rachel’s Challenge Assembly for grades 5-8.

We will have an 8:30-9:30 assembly that morning for grades 5 & 6. Following will be 7th & 8th grade assembly at 9:45-10:45.

Sol Azteca will cater a meal beginning at 5:30. The community event will begin at 6:45. Reservations must be made by Thursday the 12th for the meal. We will have free child care during the event for children under 5th grade.

We encourage all 5th through 8th grade parents to bring their student(s) and attend the night time event. If you are unable to come to the night event you are welcome to attend the morning assembly.

Rachel’s Challenge will empower our students to make positive changes in themselves, our schools, our homes and our communities. Rachel Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School Tragedy. She left behind an amazing legacy and a simple challenge to anyone who will accept it- treat others with kindness and compassion and you just may change the world you live in.

Red Ribbon Week at Chandler's

The Red Ribbon Celebration brings millions of people together to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and encourage prevention, early intervention, and treatment services. It is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States.

"Under the Big Top" Fall Festival a Success

Chandler's would like to say thank you to all fall festival participants and visitors, especially the PTO volunteers, the teachers and associated staff members that helped make the night possible. This event means a great deal to the school but most importantly the students.

Additionally, the next big community event was advertised in the front lobby on Friday evening: Rachel's Challenge. On November 17th, Chandler's will embark on a new mission directed at addressing the need to be kind to others. Please check back for more information on this day and night's events!

George Rogers Clark pays visit to 5th and 8th Grades

A George Rogers Clark impersonator, Mel Hankla, from the Kentucky Humanities Council performed for fifth and eighth grades. Through the performance students were exposed to Kentucky's involvement in securing the Northwest Territory (all land north of the Ohio River up to the Canadian border).

Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Pumpkin Fun for Everyone @ Your School Library

Dear Parents, Students, and Teachers,
This year the library is getting into the fall festival spirit by having a decorated pumpkin contest of your favorite book character. It’s easy and fun for the whole family. Students may bring in a decorated pumpkin to the school library and enter it into our contest. Pumpkins may be dropped off at the library only from anytime between now and Friday, October 23rd. Below are our contest rules:
1. ABSOLUTELY NO CARVED PUMPKINS!!! Carved pumpkins rot, attract bugs, and smell. Most importantly, we do not want a child handling a knife or carving tools. Carved pumpkins will not be entered into the contest and will be sent back home. Pumpkins may be painted, decorated, etc. Let your creativity soar!
2. Pumpkins should represent a favorite book character. On the entry form you must have the title and author of the book written on the form. I would recommend getting the book information first before even starting to decorate the pumpkin.
3. This is a home project and pumpkins should be done mostly by the students but parents may assist. It would be a fun project to do as a whole family! (Just a little side note-judges tend to vote more for projects where the student’s work is evident.)
4. Do not write your name anywhere on the pumpkin. When you
bring your pumpkin to Mrs. Sindorf or Mrs. Terie in the library, they will take your pumpkin and entry form so to properly identify it.
5. Pumpkins will be judged according to the following categories:
K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8, Teachers, Family Project
* The Family Project category is for any family that would like to submit one decorated pumpkin for the whole family or multiple pumpkins representing various characters in the same book. This category maybe of interest to families that have more than one child at Chandlers.
6. The K-8 grade level judging and the family project judging will be conducted
by a panel of judges.
Teachers may enter a pumpkin in the teacher category. Students may
vote for the best teacher’s pumpkin for one ticket on the night of the fall festival.
7. Prizes:
K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8 categories- $10 Wal-Mart gift card for each category winner.
Family Project Category- Gift certificate for pizza and a board game for your family.
Teacher and Staff Category- An ice cream party for students and a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card for the teacher to purchase books for the class library. Specials teachers, aides, office staff, cafeteria workers, bus drivers may enter also. School staff may even enter as a group instead of on an individual basis if they so choose.

Backpack Nutrition Program

Chandler's Family Resource will be providing a new service to familes in November. "Feeding America" is part of Kentucky's Heartland Food Bank which has formed a partnership with the school.

This program provides non-perishable food items such as fruit cups, granola bars, milk, cereal, and canned meals to students who may not have access to meals during the weekends or school breaks. They also offer personal hygiene products such as toothpaste, shampoo, and soap.

This program is strictly voluntary and is offered to qualifying students at no cost. Children referred to the program will received a variety of items in their backpack at the end of each week. This is a confidential program offered to students who apply. If you are in need of assistance of this type, please contact our Family Resource Center at 542-7757.

Dalton Lockhart wins the Buddy Walk

Chandler's raised over $1100.00 in support of Dalton Lockhart and the Buddy Walk @ Greenwood High School last Saturday. As a result, Dalton was the winner. Well done Dalton and well done students that supported the cause!! Top classes to donate were Mrs. White ($156), Mrs. Pryor ($152), and Mrs Davis ($71). The Buddy Walk® was established in 1995 to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.

Once again, rest, relax, and enjoy your time off! See everyone in two weeks!

As the First Quarter nears a Close

We are now a mere two days from fall break: September 28th-October 9th. Chandler's wishes all students and families a safe break; please rest and relax and be ready for an exciting second quarter.

Thursday, September 24th is picture day at Chandler's, wear your best smile. Backgrounds can be viewed at www.grahamphotograpybg.com Also, Thursday there will be a parent meeting for archery at 6 p.m. for grades 2nd-8th.

On Monday, October 12th, tryouts for basketball will begin. Boys Coach: Stanley Fleming Girls Coach: Kristi Porter **Please remember that all players intending to try out must have a current year physical turned in beforehand. Physical forms can be downloaded from the school web site.

A PTO meeting will be held the Monday we return, Oct. 12th, at 5:30 in the library.

Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 15th beginning at 3:15 p.m. Report cards can be picked up the night of conferences or else they will be sent home with students on Friday, Oct. 16th.

EXPLORE TEST TO BE GIVEN
8TH GRADERS

September 17th – 18th the 8th graders at Chandler’s will be taking the Explore (ACT) Test. Across the state every 8th grader will be taking this same test and the scores will be reported to the Kentucky Department of Education. These scores will also be figured into our testing accountability scores for this year. We would like to encourage you to have your child here at school each day that we give the test. Testing will be done in the mornings, so if they have an appointment on these days please make it in the afternoons.

The Explore Test will give students a snapshot of their academic skills and knowledge in English, mathematics, science, and reading. It also lets them know how they are measuring up to the college readiness standards that colleges look at for entering freshman. Furthermore the Explore Test is designed to help students begin to focus on personally relevant career possibilities. To find out more about this test visit www.actstudent.org/explore.

Thoroughbred Readers Program Under Way!

Parents please visit the school web site and under the parent section you will find a link with the Thoroughbred titles. Several students have already signed up and are well underway. In order to be considered a Thoroughbred Reader all books on the list must be completed by May 1st and additionally, the students must score at least an 80% on the Accelerated Reader quizzes.

4-H Club Set To Begin

Chandler’s School Starts a 4-H Club

Gary Michael Templeman from the UK Extension Office will be starting a 4-H Club at Chandler’s. It will be for grades 4th-8th and will meet once a month after school from 3:10-4:10. The after-school club will offer fun, hands-on activities, with possible subjects including healthy living, communications, family and consumer sciences, environmental and earth science, plants and animals, science and technology and leadership. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to practice and learn leadership skills, set goals, learn to make sound decisions and resolve conflicts. If you are interested in being a part of the 4-H Club see Mrs. Winchester at school for more information about dates and times they will meet.

Thanks to all parents, students, and staff for making family fun night a success. The staff did a wonderful job of preparing fun activities and the visitors walked away with homemade Native American crafts, chia pets, abacuses, games, and even had the chance to taste Japanese and French delicacies.

Good Morning! It's a great day at Chandler's School. We just completed the morning meeting, just a reminder that all parents are welcome and encouraged to join the excitement in the gym from 7:30-7:40. Also, to clear up any confusion, parents/guardians are still allowed to walk students to the classrooms in the mornings.

If you are picking up your child inside the school building in the afternoons, please note that we need you to follow your child to the cafeteria and exit in the car rider area rather than taking them out of line in the front lobby. This may be a bit inconvenient, but it is school policy and simply a means of providing the most protection for your child.

The SBDM committee will meet this afternoon at 4 p.m. The committee is in charge of directing and guiding all school decisions.

Middle school football kicks off this Thursday with a home game against Butler County Middle. Good luck to the team!

Just a note for parents: the early dismissal on Fridays provides a window of opportunity for the teachers to meet and improve the instruction for your children. Last Friday, nearly all teachers were still working hard at 4 p.m.
